Loire - St Nicolas de Bourgeuil - Wine from the Agnès and Xavier Amirault estate
Jean-François Roit-Leveque, vineyard manager at Clos des Quarterons, and Agnès and Xavier Amirault have embarked on a new adventure together.
Le Grand Mont, one of the most emblematic vineyards in the Bourgueil appellation, is located in the hills above Benais. This exceptional parcel produces deep, powerful Cabernet Francs with great finesse.
Soil
The clay-limestone terroir of Grand Mont is underlain by the Middle Turonian, with a layer of clay varying in thickness from 50 cm to 1 metre, rich in micaceous chalk particles.
Vine management
We prefer to keep intervention to a minimum, with two or three inter-tillage passes per year. The plot is naturally grassed and not mown. In biodynamic viticulture, we apply several treatments of Maria Thun compost, horn dung and 2 to 3 sprays of horn silica. Most of our biodynamic preparations come from the Groupement Biodynamique du Bourgueillois. Manual work includes disbudding and late pruning, around the second half of March.
Vinification
We hand-pick healthy grapes at optimum ripeness. The grapes are destemmed and sorted a second time in the winery, then put into vats. Only indigenous yeasts are used, with no additives. Fermentation takes place by slow infusion over a period of 3 to 4 weeks.
Ageing
The wine is matured for 24 months, partly in 10hL earthenware jars and partly in 500L barrels, in the Caves du Vau Renou, under ideal temperature and humidity conditions.
