Château Haut Marbuzet 2021
Saint-Estèphe - Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel
94/100 James Suckling
Red currants, iron, white pepper, and orange zest, enhanced by sweet spices and a hint of chili chocolate. Tight and refined on the palate, medium to full-bodied, with a tight and juicy finish. Beautiful tannic integrity and minerality extend to a long, compact finish. An excellent Saint-Estèphe from this vintage, surpassing many others. Drink now, but best from 2026.

MORE INFO:
Terroir Today: The 33-hectare vineyard of Chateau Haut Bailly has 30 hectares planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. This represents a change in the vineyard with less Cabernet Sauvignon, more Petit Verdot, and a reduction in Cabernet Franc over the years.
In fact, as the Cabernet Franc vines die, they are now being replaced by Cabernet Sauvignon. There is also a very small percentage of Malbec and Carmenere.
The terroir consists of gravel, sandstone and sand over limestone soils. The sandstone of the soils contains a large number of petrified fossils, which adds to the unique character of the wine. The vineyard consists of one large block of vines, which is separated only by a small road in the vineyard.
