Nuits St Georges 1er Cru 2014 Aux Vignerondes en Magnum - Daniel Rion
Domaine Daniel Rion & Fils
94/100 Wine Spectator: Rich and dense, it exudes aromas and flavours of black cherry, blackcurrant, iron and spices. The mineral aspect intensifies as it develops to give a long aftertaste, echoing details of fruit and black pepper. The dry, chalky finish leaves a tactile impression. Best consumed between 2020 and 2038. 56 imported cases. - BS
The domain will tell you all about it: Situated to the north of Nuits-St-Georges, this part of the vineyard is made up of brown limestone and stony soils, with a fine texture of clay and silt on the surface, more clayey at depth. The presence of marl rich in oyster fossils gives this wine its characteristics. On a fairly gentle slope, on 41 ares, the vines are 30 and 55 years old.
This premier cru is not the most characteristic of the Nuits Saint Georges appellation. As its name suggests, it is very round and delicate, reminiscent of the Vosne Romanée vineyards. It is distinguished by a pronounced nose of blackcurrant and exuberant fruitiness. Its suppleness does not prevent it from having a lot of substance, which makes it a powerful wine that can be kept for a very long time.
It will accompany roasted red meat or meat in sauce, even fairly spicy, small game or good poultry such as Bresse chicken. It will go well with most cheeses that are matured but not too strong.
