Tasted by Robert M. Parker, Jr. on April 23, 1999 : "Proprietor Christian Moueix's 1996s have been performing well in bottle. The 1996 Petrus is a big, square, monolithic wine with an impressive opaque purple colour, sweet red fruits intermixed with earth, toast, and coffee. Full-bodied and muscular, with high levels of tannin, and a backward style, this wine (less than 50% of the production was bottled under the Petrus name) will require patience. It is a gigantic example."
