Pommard 1er Cru Grands Épenots 2019 - Domaine de Montille
92+/100 Parker
Aging potential : 2027 to 2060
Tasting note by William Kelley on January 20, 2022: "The 2019 Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Epenots reveals aromas of dark berries, plums, raw cocoa, sweet soil tones and spice. Deep and tight, with powdery tannins, lively acids and a chalky finish, this is a 2019 that will need some time to reveal all its cards."
The appellation: Pommard is the appellation that makes wine lovers dream. Its 312.76 hectares of pinot noir (including 115 hectares classified as Premiers Crus) play on two terrains: to the south (near Volnay), the wines are racy and powerful, while to the north (closer to Beaune), the wines are silkier, more airy. But this rule suffers from a few exceptions, including "Les Grands Épenots" planted on a rich and fat clay-limestone soil. This Premier Cru is the subject of a request for classification as a Grand Cru which was initiated in 2012.
The words "epeneaux, épenots, epenottes" certainly come from the same root as "épine"; it is possible that in the middle of the vines there were many thorny bushes in the unplanted parts.
Our Pommard "Grands Épenots" is the most "Pommard" of our Pommard which shows its earthy, masculine side, with an imposing power even if the nobility of the terroir gives it a certain refinement.
The wines, the style : Domaine de Montille is known for producing wines of great aromatic purity, always favouring balance and elegance rather than power or extraction. The wines are a classic expression of Burgundy, produced in the most natural way possible and with an impressive ageing capacity, as we believe that only time reveals the Great Wines. The estate's current style remains faithful to the naturalness and classicism recognised in Hubert's wines, some vintages of which required a great deal of patience, but Etienne strives to bring more openness to the bouquet in the reds, and more silkiness and smoothness to the textures without compromising the wines' ageing capacity. The estate is known with a few others in Burgundy (Arlot, DRC, Dujac, Leroy, etc...) to vinify on a regular basis, leaving a large proportion of the whole harvest which is determined each year for each vintage.
Cultivation of the vine : The Domaine has been practicing organic farming since 1995. Our wines are now Ecocert certified. Since 2005, biodynamic farming has been added to these practices, which respect the soil and living organisms.
