Tasted by David Schildknecht in 2009: "The ripe black fruit on the nose of Clos de La Roche sets the stage for luscious, generously sweet fruit, a fluffier texture and a generally sunnier disposition than that presented by the corresponding Clos St.-Denis. Ripe cherry and red currant flood the creamy, silky palate with sweetness, while some of the same citrus oil, floral perfume (here iris) and peat notes as in the Clos St.-Denis also swirl around. Saline and chalky suggestions provide contrast and a sounding board for the fruit, and the whole thing finishes with exhilarating lift, fascinating interplay and phenomenal length. Here is a combination of textural allure and spine for which velvet gloves and iron fists seem inappropriate and trite metaphors, not just archaic. Blind - I must confess (and did, to Ponsot) - that I would more likely have guessed it was a Musigny than a Clos de la Roche. In an extreme case of a phenomenon shared by many of the best 2006s, I find it irresistible now; I find it hard to imagine it having phases of anger or sulkiness; and yet I expect it to be worth following for 20 years.
