Order wine Chambolle Musigny Vieilles Vignes 2023 - René Bouvier
94/100 James Suckling
This Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes cuvée comes from several small parcels spread across the village, representing a total area of 0.55 hectares. The vines, approximately 60 years old, draw their character from diverse terroirs located between the village center and the boundaries of the Morey-Saint-Denis appellation. This wine thus expresses the elegance and complexity typical of Chambolle-Musigny, combined with a beautiful depth imparted by the age of the vines.
On the palate, it reveals a refined bouquet of cherry, raspberry, violet, and spice, supported by a delicate texture and flavorful fruitiness. The palate is distinguished by its balance and length, with a persistent finish marked by a subtle touch of salinity. While it has excellent aging potential, it can be enjoyed within its first five years after decanting for an hour.
The estate cultivates its vines using environmentally friendly practices: soil cultivation, massal selection, and hand-harvesting with sorting in the vineyard. After sorting on a sorting table, the grapes are gravity-fed into the vats, with approximately 50% whole clusters depending on the vintage. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, and vinification prioritizes infusion to preserve the fruit's finesse. The wine is aged for approximately 18 months in oak barrels, 20% of which are new, with bottling carried out with minimal sulfur and according to the lunar calendar. The plots, facing east to southeast, extend across the entire hillside at varying altitudes; the diversity of soils and subsoils, characteristic of the appellation, contributes to the wine's richness and complexity.
