Château Trottevieille, is a 13.5 hectare wine estate located in Saint-Émilion. it is classified Premier grand cru classé B in the latest rankings of Saint-Emilion wines in 2006.
Incorporated in 1453, the Château Trotte Vieille is one of the oldest properties in Saint-Emilion. Trotte Vieille is an anecdotal name since it is the fruit of a legend. An amusing legend to say the least, according to which an elderly lady from the 14th century used to walk to the place where the stagecoaches stopped and rush to get the news. This is how the inhabitants of Saint-Emilion named her "Trottevieille".
Philipe Casteja is currently in charge of the estate. The Casteja family owns several vineyards in Bordeaux including the Château Lynch-Moussas and the Château Batailley in Pauillac and the Domaine de l'Eglise in Pomerol.
Located just east of the village, the vineyard not far from Troplong Mondot or Pavie Macquin has old vines averaging nearly 50 years old.
The wines of the Château Trotte Vieille are made up of:
The vineyard has gained an additional 3.5 hectares of vines due to the merger with their other Saint-Emilion estate, Château Bergat.
From the 2004 vintage, Château Trotte Vieille has started to produce a small quantity of wine from its oldest vines giving birth to more precise and better quality wines. This unique 100% old grape variety, "Les Vieilles Vignes du Château Trotte Vieille" is not commercially available as it is produced in very small quantities. 135 hand-engraved bottles are produced in each vintage, making it the rarest wine produced in Bordeaux today.
To produce the wine of Château Trotte Vieille, the vinification is carried out in traditional concrete vats. The wines are aged in 98% new French oak barrels on average for 12 to 18 months.
The estate also produces a second wine, "La Vieille Dame de Trotte Vieille", which made its debut with the 2000 vintage.
