Volnay 1er Cru 2008 Les Caillerets - La Pousse d'Or
SURFACE AREA : 2,24 ha
GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir
VINEYARD : Facing east, "En Caillerets" is positioned halfway up the slope. Organic and biodynamic cultivation. Stony, rich in marl and limestone, the high percentage of clay on the site is supposed to contribute to the suppleness of the wine in the mouth. Age of the vines: 45 years and more
WINEMAKING PROCESS : Hand picked. De-stemmed. Cold maceration for one week; fermented on indigenous yeasts in vats. Aged in French oak barrels (30% new) for 18 months. Minimal addition of sulphur. Gravity displacement; unrefined and unfiltered.
TASTING : Open nose exhaling fruit aromas, complex aromatic and very deep on the palate ; well-balanced and fat wine.
WINE AND FOOD pairing : red meat with pepper sauce ; eggs in a "meurette" sauce ; matured French cheese.
THE DOMAIN : Domaine de la Pousse d'Or has for decades been the collectors' choice for expressive and memorable wines from the most sacred terroirs of Burgundy, and is unquestionably part of the Burgundian elite. The history of Pousse d'Or in Volnay underlines its influence through the ages. In 1855, the winery was part of a larger estate that included Romanée-Conti and Clos de Tart. In 1997, Patrick Landanger bought the winery and its vineyards. In the mid-2000s, Landanger added an impressive collection of Côte de Nuits vineyards (from Domaine Moine-Hudelot) to his portfolio. The estate's commitment to sustainable viticulture, following the principles of biodynamics, is serious. The vineyards are cared for without the use of pesticides or herbicides and are regularly ploughed.
