Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann 2019 Clos St Urbain - Zind-Humbrecht
Domaine Zind Humbrecht - Wine from the estate
98/100 James Suckling
"So spicy and smoky with a hint of mushroom, this is an enormously deep and concentrated dry pinot gris that’s just beginning to open up. With some aeration, ripe melon character is added to the expansive picture. Tons of spice at the imposing, dry finish and just a hint of raisin. From biodynamically grown grapes."

The Terroir: Unique Geology
Formed approximately 350 million years ago by the activity of an ancient stratovolcano, Rangen de Thann is Alsace’s southernmost vineyard. Situated at the mouth of the valley, it overlooks the Thur River and the town of Thann. Its dense volcanic rock soils (greywacke) are resistant to erosion but eventually yield a rich clay, allowing the deep roots of the old vines to nourish the wine's complexity. Celebrated since the Middle Ages, this truly unique terroir imbues its wines with an extraordinary mineral identity. The Story of the Cuvée
While the Rangen vineyard has historically benefited from the autumn humidity of the Thur River to develop noble rot, changing climatic conditions now encourage a focus on fruit purity and precision. For the 2019 vintage, the goal was to harvest healthy, ripe grapes to produce a thoroughly dry wine. Thanks to its volcanic terroir and naturally very low yields, this Pinot Gris expresses its full power without artifice.
Tasting Notes (February 2021)
Appearance: Pale gold color.
Nose: Highly complex, marked by intense, smoky, reductive notes that speak to its vigorous youth. Decanting or allowing the wine to breathe reveals classic flint aromas and subtle hints of white fruit.
Palate: Vibrant and powerful, built on multiple layers and supported by a firm structure. The finish is distinguished by lively acidity that enhances the wine's saline minerality, lending it a remarkably dry profile. A wine with great aging potential that will develop beautifully over time.

Hint: Level of sweetness on the palate. Scale from 1 to 5.
1: technically dry or tasting dry. 2: not technically dry, but the sugars are not obviously apparent on the palate. Some tasters may find a slight roundness on the finish. These wines will taste dry with some bottle age. 3: medium sweetness, more important in the youth of the wine, which will gradually fade with age. 4 : Sweet wine. 5 : Sweet wine, very close to a Vendange Tardive
Attention: The bottles of Alsace wine do not fit into the wooden boxes sold separately.
