Domaine Zind Humbrecht - Wine from the estate

96/100 Parker

  • When to drink this wine : This wine can be drunk now until 2040 (+).
  • Tasted by David Schildknecht in 2011: "Orange liqueur, vanilla, nutmeg, white grape, musk and smoky black tea on the nose of Zind-Humbrecht's 2008 Pinot Gris Rotenberg Selection de Grains Nobles are echoed in a multi-faceted way on a palate that has a strange combination of creaminess and fascinating freshness, and on which nearly 200 grams of residual sugar are by no means too sweet. It traces a quick path across the palate with almost indelible traces. I predict at least 30 years of enjoyment for those who have the time. "
  • Bottling :September 2009
  • Alcohol content :10.5°.
  • Residual sugar :198.0 g/l
  • Total acidity :6.4 g/l H2SO4
  • pH :3.4
  • Yield :17 hl/ha
  • Optimum tasting :2015-2038+.
  • Average age of the vines :27 years
  • Terroir :Oligocene limestone facing west north-west. Strong slope

Description :The Rotenberg is located on the west-northwestern slope of the Hengst. It shares the same Oligocene limestone substratum as the adjacent Grand Cru, but has a much finer and therefore stonier soil surface. The characteristic red color comes from the oxidation of iron, a mineral very present in the rocks of the Rotenberg. The altitude and exposure contribute to the development of noble rot (morning fog and late evening sun) when the weather is favorable as in 2008. The sorting of healthy grapes made at the beginning of the harvest allowed to leave the botrytized grapes a little longer which were harvested with a lot of botrytis. The selection of noble grapes was therefore easy to obtain. The important acidity of the Pinot Gris in 2008 forced the fermentation to stop early, thus forcing the wine to balance itself around an important liquor for a balance in finesse.
