Domaine Zind Humbrecht - Wine from the estate
98/100 James Suckling
If you like sleek dry whites with enormous expression, then you won’t be able to resist this diamond-bright yet incredibly juicy dry riesling. Gigantic crushed rock minerality and super-racy acidity. Almost perfect balance in the incredibly long, focused finish. From five small plots of more than 50-year-old vines in this great but underrated site. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
Caution: The bottles of Alsace wine do not fit into the wooden boxes sold separately.
Technical Sheet Grape Variety: 100% Riesling Terroir: Grand Cru Wineck-Schlossberg (Katzenthal) — Two-mica granite soil; steep, south/south-east facing slope. Average Vine Age: 41 years Yield: 29 hl/ha Sweetness Index: 1 (Dry wine) Analysis: Alcohol: 13.0% vol. Residual Sugar: 2.6 g/l Total Acidity: 4.0 g/l ($H_2SO_4$) or 6.1 g/l (Tartaric acid) pH: 3.20 Bottling: January 2025 Optimal Drinking Window: 2026–2047+ Wine Description Nestled in the heart of the enclosed Katzenthal valley, the Grand Cru Wineck-Schlossberg reveals itself off the beaten path of the Wine Route, just beyond a picturesque village. Comprising two magnificent, steeply sloped hills, its natural amphitheater faces from southeast to southwest. Although its granitic terroir is similar to that of the Brand or Sommerberg, its sheltered position protects it from the wind, creating a warmer summer climate that lends the wines remarkable power. While the surface soils may appear austere, the weathered granite beneath is rich in minerals. Deep root systems allow the vines to access this mineral wealth and an ideal water reserve. Shaped by a slow, patient fermentation, the 2023 vintage achieves masterful balance, resulting in a magnificent dry wine of remarkable purity.
