Macan Clasico 2021 - Vega Sicilia & Benjamin de Rothschild
Directly from the wine estate
95/100 Robert Parker
Cellaring: 2025 - 2035
“The Macán Clásico 2021 comes from a fantastic year in Rioja; it's the second vintage in which we've used a little Garnacha (maybe 5% this year, they're slowly increasing). It was harvested at the same time as the Tempranillo and adds freshness. The year was marked by above-average rainfall, a mild spring and a little hail in mid-June, which affected seven hectares of vines but not the rest. The weather was stable during the harvest, with mild temperatures. The wine has a moderate alcohol content of 14%, a pH of 3.7 and an acidity of 4.7 grams. Fifty percent of the volume was inoculated with indigenous yeast, and fermentation took place in stainless steel. Forty percent of the wine was aged in new French oak barrels, 30% in used French oak barrels, 5% in American oak barrels and the remaining 25% was kept in stainless steel. It has a herbaceous touch and a more Atlantic character, reflecting a cooler (less hot) vintage. It has a fine grain, a chalky texture, very fine tannins and great balance. Production: 222,532 bottles, 2,001 magnums and a few larger formats. It was bottled in August 2023. Luis Gutiérrez tasting
