Viticulture was introduced in Spain in the south by the Phoenicians, and on the eastern coasts by the Greeks from Massalia. The Roman colonization structured the current vineyard.
In 2010, the Spanish vineyard has an area of 1,102,100 hectares, of which 959,000 hectares are used to produce wine, making it the largest in the world by surface area. The wines of Sherry, Rioja, Priorat and Ribera del Duero are among the most prestigious in the world.
