Tasted by Luis Gutiérrez on December 30, 2019: "To be released in 2020, the NV Único Reserva Especial 2020 Release is a non-vintage blend of 59 barrels of 2008, 2009 and 2010, mostly Tempranillo with some Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine has moved closer to the style of Único, and the blend is from vintages very close to the current version of Único, but in some ways this year I think the blend has added some complexity to the wine in bottle, which has the heart and soul of the 2010 vintage. In fact, they told me that they were keeping more wine to have older vintages to blend for this Reserva Especial, because in recent years the wine was a bit too young for the style it had in the past. This wine has finesse and a bit of the Burgundian style of the blends of yesteryear. 17,071 bottles and 214 magnums produced. It was bottled in June 2016. At Vega Sicilia, they have increased the capacity to age the wines with more 40,000 litre oak vats. The Único released in 2020 will be the 2010, a vintage that has raised great expectations. This year I was pleasantly surprised by the Reserva Especial, which despite being a blend of recent vintages, seems to have inherited the character of the wines of old."

It is the red that has no vintage, the tribute to tradition. With this wine, the winery wishes to continue a very old Spanish custom and also combine the balance between the vintages. Traditionally, in Spain, the few wineries that had a bottling process made two types of wine with each harvest: the current year's wine and another wine without a specific vintage, which was called "Reserva Especial". This was a mixture of wines from the best vintages from which the most representative wine from the winery emerged.

The Reserva Especial is the wine that, with more personality, brings together the complexity of the Único by multiplying it with several vintages and offers us an immense aromatic range, pure elegance in an eternal journey through the magic of a myth. Only the best Uniques are used to produce a Special Reserve; a mixture of years, virtues, experiences and feelings that only draw the deepest essence of a unique style, the Vega Sicilia style.
