Tasted by Lisa Perrotti-Brown in 2019: "Medium gold in colour, the 1997 Château d'Yquem rolls effortlessly out of the glass with very spicy scents of ginger, coriander seed, cinnamon stick and clove over a background of caramel, candied kumquats, praline, lemon and crème brûlée. Silky-textured, rich, opulent and packed with flavour, it has a superb, discreet freshness and a very long finish of roasted nuts. Alcohol is 13.9% this year, with residual sugar of 120 grams per litre, and total acidity is 4.8 grams per litre H2SO4."
What was the 1997 vintage like for the Yquem vineyards?
"The climate was exceptional, relatively hot and dry, which meant that botrytis developed very slowly this year. Warm temperatures brought plenty of sweetness, while light rain at the end of the season finally stimulated the spread of noble rot, resulting in a very good potential Sauternes vintage in the end. However, careful selection was essential, ultimately enabling Yquem to make an impressive wine, well above the norm for the vintage."
