Product description
97/100 Parker
Maturity: 2016 - 2032
Commented by Jeb Dunnuck on October 31, 2014: "A remarkable effort, the 2012 blockbuster Châteauneuf du Pape Chante le Merle Vieilles Vignes is close to 2010 in terms of quality. Produced from a selection of the best plots and old vines of the estate, co-fermented, and without destemming, it offers unique notes of blackcurrant, chocolate-covered cherries, garrigue, liquorice and roasted spices. Massively rich and deep, with tons of glycerin, texture and length, it remains remarkably elegant, balanced and pure on the palate, with well-constructed tannins yet without hard edges. This breathtaking Chateauneuf will have two decades of longevity and should not be missed".
Production
10 000 to 13 000 bottles per year.
Terroir / Average age of the vineyard
Clayey-limestone soil scattered with pebble roads accumulating heat during the day and restoring it to the vines at night.
Mixture of all types of silt from the appellation (pebbles, clay and sand).
Selection of old vines between 80 and 90 years old.
Grape varieties
80% Grenache Noir 10% Syrah
10% Mourvedre
Vinification / Maturing
Traditional vinification in thermo-regulated concrete vats.
No destemming.
Some daily delestage and pumping over carried out with the greatest delicacy.
Vatting time: about 35 days.
Ageing in new barrels and demi-muids (15-20%): 12 to 18 months.
Tasting
Pretty bright red dress with purple reflections. Elegant and complex nose at the same time. Very aromatic, this Chateauneuf-du-Pape is elegant and long in the mouth. Powerful wine with a potential to keep for several years.
Accompaniment
Served at room temperature, this powerful wine goes wonderfully with hare stews, game and truffle omelettes.
