Chateauneuf du Pape 2020 Les Hauts Lieux - Domaine de la Vieille Julienne
96/100 Parker
Tasted by Yohan Castaing
Drink between 2024 and 2054
"In a vintage like 2020, the Cabrières terroir, located in the northern part of the appellation and benefiting from welcome shade during the hottest hours, proved to be a valuable asset, as evidenced by the 2020 Les Hauts-Lieux. Offering a deep and complex bouquet of black cherries, licorice, iris, and flowers, this wine is ample, lively, and vibrant, with a taut, crystalline texture and a fleshy, dense palate, perfectly structured by ripe, velvety, and silky tannins. Its bitterness and acidity, characteristic of fine dining, give it excellent aging potential, allowing it to age for a decade or more."
Tasting: Intense, with a powerful core of blackcurrant, fig and blackberry jam flavors mixed with notes of bittersweet cocoa, smoky tobacco and warm earth. A tarry handle supports the finish.
Vineyard: This is the highest and most sheltered part of the slope. The marly soils and shallower saffrons covered with quartzite pebbles are particularly suitable for mourvèdre. It is also the coolest and later part of the vineyard and under the frequent firmness of the tannins, the wines are vigorous and of great elegance.
Surface area: 4.5 ha
Grape varieties: black grenache, mourvèdre, cinsault and counoise.
Average age of the vines: 70 years
