Côte-Rôtie 1993 Brune et Blonde - Guigal
Domaine Guigal
A true emblem of the House of Guigal, the Côte-Rôtie "Brune & Blonde" perfectly captures the complementary nature of the appellation’s two great historic terroirs. On one hand, the iron-oxide-rich schist soils of the Côte Brune lend the wine power and structure; on the other, the siliceous-limestone terroirs of the Côte Blonde contribute finesse and elegance. Crafted from vines averaging 35 years of age, planted on dramatic, steep terraces, this cuvée is a blend of 96% Syrah and 4% Viognier. The traditional winemaking process emphasizes patience, featuring carefully controlled temperatures and an extended maceration period of approximately three weeks, followed by an exceptional 38-month maturation in oak barrels (50% of which are new).
In the glass, this wine displays a deep, intense hue. The nose opens with a complex bouquet of ripe dark fruits—such as blackberry and blackcurrant—complemented by the freshness of violets, notes of sweet spices like black pepper, and delicate hints of oak and vanilla. On the palate, the wine is captivating, offering a generous texture supported by a velvety tannic structure and a distinct mineral character. Best served between 16°C and 18°C, this superb, age-worthy wine pairs beautifully with dry-aged beef, red meat in rich sauces, game, or mature cheeses, and concludes with remarkable aromatic length.
