Lirac Baron Louis 2016 - Domaine de Montfaucon
From the estate
(92 - 94)/100 Parker
Cellaring: 2019 - 2025
Tasted by Joe Czerwinski in 2018: "The 2016 Lirac Baron Louis is a blend of 50% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 15% Cinsault, 10% Carignan, and 5% Mourvèdre that spends a year in oak, then a year in tank, and it will spend a year in bottle before release. At this stage, it's pushing all the buttons of pleasure, offering ripe raspberries and Madagascar vanilla in a full-bodied format. It's plush, creamy and expansive on the palate, finishing rich and velvety."
This historic property is located next to the Rhone River on its western bank, with views across the valley to the Dentelles de Montmirail and Mont Ventoux in the distance. The current owner, Rodolphe du Pins, has been making wine at this property since 1995. He is a fan of the Lirac appellation and the Clairette grape, the estate's superior white wine from 140-year-old Clairette vines. "The '16 was just extraordinary," he says. "For both the whites and the reds."
