Échezeaux Grand cru En Orveaux 2023 - Magnum - Domaine Faiveley
98/100 James Suckling
Exceptionally floral and silky, this wine charms with its refined and seductive character, reminiscent of a great Musigny. Its power and concentration remain beautifully understated, gliding effortlessly across the medium-bodied palate with remarkable elegance and finesse. Vibrant mineral acidity brings precision and energy, carrying through to an impressively long finish. Produced from organically grown grapes and matured in equal parts new oak barriques and once-used casks.
The estate currently cultivates a 0.83-hectare plot in a commanding position between the Musigny of Domaine Prieur and the vineyards of Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Combe d’Orveau. Located in the heart of the “En Orveaux” sub-climate, this vineyard benefits from a south-facing exposure, which promotes the production of a wine that is both generous and luminous. The low proportion of clay in the soils, however, explains its naturally more delicate color. The shallow marl slopes, susceptible to both frost and periods of drought, strongly influence the wine's identity, which expresses its full complexity in cooler vintages or those with balanced rainfall.
The plot, planted between 1950, 1956, and 1982, yields an Échezeaux Grand Cru with an elegant and refined profile. On tasting, the wine displays a deep and brilliant ruby color. The bouquet reveals aromas of ripe black fruit accompanied by slightly toasty and spicy nuances from aging. The palate is distinguished by its harmonious texture, supported by fine, well-integrated tannins, offering balance and persistence. This wine will benefit from being served at around 16°C after decanting for one to two hours in its youth and will ideally accompany roasted meats, pigeon, or dishes with delicate sauces. Possessing remarkable aging potential, it will develop more complex notes of undergrowth and sweet spices over time.
