LOCATION AND CLIMATE

The Hautes-Côtes vineyard is located in the "hinterland", parallel to the Côte de Nuits, on the plateau. The numerous small valleys with well exposed hillsides, generally to the south and south-east, offer an exceptional situation for the vines. The climate of the Hautes-Côtes is a little harsher than that of the Côte. The air circulates more freely through the valleys and hills, with temperatures sometimes dropping to -15°C. However, the climatic conditions are very favourable for the cultivation of the vine, the exposure compensating for the influences of altitude.

HISTORY

In this land of Vergy, the monks and canons who once owned many vineyards on the Côte, contributed to the extent of the Hautes-Côtes vineyards, especially in the 18th century. After the scourge of the phylloxera crisis at the end of the 19th century and the tragic even of the 1914 War, the vineyards were replanted in priority in the Côte, notably because of the parcels' fragmentation and the difficulties of working the vines. In spite of this very serious crisis and to defend these quality wines, the Union Syndicale des Hautes-Côtes-de-Beaune et de Nuits-St-Georges was created in 1921. Through perseverance and after decades of effort, on 4 August 1961, the Institut National des Appellations d'Origine recognised the appellations Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes-de-Nuits and Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes-de-Beaune planted exclusively with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. This decree orders a mandatory analysis and tasting to obtain this specific appellation.

CHARACTER OF THE WINE

The wines of the Hautes-Côtes-de-Nuits express themselves with great purity through their freshness and the intensity of the red and black fruits: redcurrant, raspberry, blackcurrant. Drunk in its full-bodied youth, but still not too early, the pinot is very fruity, then evolving towards fur and undergrowth.

GASTRONOMY

It can be accompanied by grilled red meat, sautéed marengo veal, rabbit fricassee with mustard or a cheese with a discreet flavour.
