Corton Grand Cru Clos du Roi 2005 Magnum - La Pousse d'Or
93/100 Parker
GRAPE VARIETY: 100% Pinot Noir
Soil: Clayey-limestone soil
APPELLATION : Grand Cru
VINEYARDS: The estate's vineyards extend over three acres in this grand cru facing east. Biodynamic.
The soils are a classic Burgundian mixture of limestone and clay. Age of the vines: 30-40 years old
WINEMAKING PROCESS: Hand-picked. De-stemmed. Cold maceration for one week; fermented on indigenous yeasts in vats. Aged in French oak barrels (30% new) for 18 months. Minimal addition of sulphur. Displacement by gravity; bottled without filtration and without addition of fine particles.
TASTING : Aromas of black cherry, liquorice, hot spices, some violet flowers. The sweet fruit surrounds a structured core; the tannins are fine.
WINE AND FOOD AGING PARTNERS : Flank steak with pepper; oeufs en meurette (poached eggs in red Burgundy); matured French cheese.
THE DOMAIN: Domaine de la Pousse d'Or has for decades been the collectors' choice for expressive and memorable wines from Burgundy's most sacred terroirs, and is unquestionably one of the elite of Burgundy. The history of Pousse d'Or in Volnay underlines its influence through the ages. In 1855, it was expanded to include Romanée-Conti and Clos de Tart. In 1997, Patrick Landanger bought the winery and its vineyards. In the mid-2000s, Landanger added an impressive collection of Côte de Nuits vineyards (from Domaine Moine-Hudelot) to his portfolio. The estate's commitment to sustainable viticulture, following biodynamic principles, is serious. The vineyards are cared for without the use of pesticides or herbicides and are regularly ploughed.
