"This 2019 Schoenenbourg Grand Cru, with its golden hue, opens with a ripe and complex nose of black apricots. The palate is long, complex, and powerful. Tasted from a second bottle, the same wine reveals a much more precise and fruity nose, deep and refined, while retaining great complexity. Aromas of perfectly ripe apricot mingle with vegetal notes typical of the terroir. This dense, rich, and powerful Schoenenbourg, with its great complexity and assertive structure, offers a finish of exceptional length and complexity. Too young to express its full potential today, it is nonetheless very promising. 14% ABV with less than 15g of residual sugar per liter. Natural cork. Tasted at the estate in April 2024." Winemaker tells you: 

The Schoenenbourg, renowned since the Middle Ages, is the jewel in the crown of the RIQUEWIHR vineyard. The greatest wines of this commune are born on this soil and have contributed to its almost universal fame. This terroir is distinguished by its topography (southern exposure, location at the bottom of the valley, steep slope) and its very special geology (iridescent and gypseous marl from the KEUPER, more or less mixed and covered by Vosges sandstone).

SINCE THE MIDDLE AGES

The combination of a light, non-sticky soil and a clay subsoil, rich in fertilizing elements and with good water retention, no doubt explains the dominant character of the terroir on the grape variety and the particularity of the Schoenenbourg wines. These wines express undeniable aptitude for ageing and travelling, a richness and an extraordinary corpulence, while at the same time moving away from the typical: a peppery, even smoky nose, verticality masked by body, mineral expression of a wine often hidden in its youth and moving towards fossilized reminiscences with time. Finally, the ability to integrate very high residual sugar potentials, linked to the almost always present Noble Rot. The Schoenenbourg are indeed among the Very Great Wines of Alsatian soils.
