Mercurey 1er Cru Les Veleys red 2018 - François Raquillet


This wine for laying down oscillates between power and solidity with very silky tannins on the palate and a mineral finish that brings freshness. This wine is gradually refined to evolve towards a smoother texture after a few years.

By William Kelley in 2020: "The Mercurey 1er Cru Les Veleys 2018 is also very promising, and with a bit of age in bottle, it may well rival Les Nauges for the title of its best red this year. Blending aromas of wild berries, blackcurrant, coniferous forest floor, and spicy new oak, it is medium-bodied, velvety and layered, with lively acids, powdery tannins, and a penetrating finish. Still a little tense after its recent bottling, it will reward at least a year or two of patience". 



SITUATION: Exposed to the rising sun full east.

SURFACE AREA : 0.80 hectare

Soil: Soil from marls with little limestone.

MEDIUM AGE: 65 years old


PRESENTATION : This vine is pruned in cordon de Royat. The soil is cultivated mechanically with several ploughings per year. The vine is de-budded in order to thin out the medium and obtain an optimal sanitary state of the grapes. The leaves are removed from the vine, this work represents an alternative solution to avoid using anti-botrytis. The grapes are picked by hand and placed in crates, then sorted in the cellar. The work on the vines is carried out using conventional reasoned pest management.


VINIFICATION: 100% de-stemmed and then received in stainless steel vats by gravity, the grapes are then placed in vats for a pre-fermentation cold pre-fermentation maceration of 5 days (12°). Fermentation is natural with the indigenous yeasts present on the grapes and in the vat room. Alcoholic fermentation in vats and malolactic fermentation in barrels. Very little punching down of the cap, the pumping over is favoured on a daily basis at a rate of 2 per day. Devatting after 18 to 22 days and pressing.


MATURING : The wine is put in barrels (30% new barrels) for 12 months, then it is racked to finish the last 6 months of maturing in stainless steel vats in order to refine the tannins. Very light filtration before bottling, which takes place in the spring, after 2 winters in the cellar.


SERVICE : To be decanted during the first years. It is a wine to keep for 5 to 10 years. Temperature 18°.
