The Morgon is a French red wine of appellation d'origine contrôlée produced in the department of Rhône.
The appellation covers the commune of Villié-Morgon, in the Beaujolais vineyards. It is one of the ten crus of this vineyard, which are from north to south: saint-amour, juliénas, chénas, moulin-à-vent, fleurie, chiroubles, morgon, régnié, brouilly and côte-de-brouilly .
With Gamay Noir as the sole grape variety on schistose soil and ancient volcanic rocks, Morgon is a complex and structured wine. Moreover, the most structured wines are vinified in wood. The Morgon vineyard of 1,110 hectares is one of the most extensive in the Beaujolais and thus one of the most productive. The vines produce an average of 56,000 hectolitres per year. The vineyard benefits from a temperate climate with an oceanic tendency and a relatively cold winter.
The red wines are opulent with a breathtaking aromatic richness of cherry and plum while keeping spicy and kirsch notes. The Morgon has good ageing potential for up to ten years for the best.
