Domaine de la solitude 1982 - Pessac Leognan
For more than 150 years, the Domaine de la Solitude has housed a convent of nuns on the edge of the Landes. It is thanks to a priest of the diocese of Bordeaux, Pierre Bienvenu Noailles, who acquired it in 1820, that this place has today become a place of sharing around wine, welcoming both Catholics and lay people. Since 1993, Olivier Bernard, owner of Domaine de Chevalier, has leased the Domaine de la Solitude for 40 years.
With more than thirty hectares in one piece, the vineyard benefits from a gravelly-sandy soil that rests on a layer of compact clay. Since it was taken over by Olivier Bernard, a vast replanting programme has been initiated in order to obtain a better match between the grape variety and the terroir. The twenty-five hectares intended for red wine should thus, in the long term, be planted with classic Bordeaux grape varieties in the following proportions: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. The seven hectares intended for white wine will be planted with Semillon (40%) and Sauvignon (60%).
The harvest is carried out by hand by pickers used to the good atmosphere that reigns on the estate, bringing real regularity to the work of harvesting. Thus, even in small vintages, the irreproachable quality of the wines of Domaine de la Solitude must be underlined.
