Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2019 - Faiveley

Domaine Faiveley

(94 - 96)/100 Parker

By William Kelley in January 14, 2021: "Aromas of cassis, plum, orange oil, smoked meat, loamy soil, and black truffles preface Faiveley's full-bodied, velvety, sumptuous, elegantly textured 2019 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, whose broad-shouldered tannic frame is wrapped in an ample core of succulent fruit. Long and complete, this is a terrific Clos de Bèze in the making."

THE 2019 VINTAGE : It is fresh and balanced characterized by extreme weather (frost, heat wave). The volumes are low but the quality is exceptional. Harvesting began on Monday, September 9 and ended on September 21 in Côte de Nuits. The wines are charming, well balanced, fresh and straight. The tannins are fine and not very astringent. In the mouth, they are perfumed. They express juicy and sunny fruit notes as well as spicy notes.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE APPELLATION

Since the 1930s, our family has been the largest owner of this appellation. We own 3 parcels: "Grands Rangs", "Clos de Bèze Haut" and "Vieilles Vignes". The Clos de Bèze is the most complex wine of our range, it is built with time to reach its fullness.

Exposure : East, South-East

Soil : Scree slopes very rich in limestone

Grape variety : Pinot Noir

Surface Area: 1 ha 29 a 42 ca - [3,20 Acres]

Year of plantation: 1949, 1955, 1966, 1983

VINIFICATION & MATURING

The grapes are cut and sorted by hand. The proportions of de-stemming and whole grapes vary according to each vintage. A daily punching of the cap is done to extract color, tannins and aromas from the grapes. After 19 days of vatting, the alcoholic fermentation is completed. The free-run wine is drained by gravity while a slow and gentle pressing of the marc allows to obtain a press wine of great purity. For 16 to 18 months, our wines are aged in French oak barrels (60% new barrels and 40% one-wine barrels) in our cellars with a natural and constant hygrometry and temperature. These barrels are selected for the fineness of their grain and their moderate toasting.

TASTING

Beautiful deep ruby color. The nose is very pleasant and complex with empyreumatic and fruity aromas. The mouth is powerful, elegant and racy: the tannins are present and elegant. The finish is very fine and persistent.

Pairings: Guinea fowl with morels, scrambled eggs with truffles, hare à la royale

Temperature : 16°C

Aging potential : 10 to 25 years
