Pommard 1er Cru Les Pézerolles 2017 - Domaine de Montille
92/100
The name
"Les Pézerolles", in the north of the appellation, borrows its bouquet and delicate touch from the commune of Beaune. It is the finest Premier Cru of Pommard, which often gives feminine, graceful wines, paradoxically closer to the Volnay while it is located on the other side of the village. Our parcel is located in the heart of the cru, the best part that used to be "Le Clos de Pézerolles".
The name comes from the old French "Poizerolles" around the XIIth century which meant chickpea; it is likely that this vegetable was grown next to the vine.
If the "Rugiens" is the Grand Cru of Pommard, the "Grand Epenots" is the archetype of the appellation and the Pézerolles is the outsider. It is difficult to recognize this Pommard during blind tastings, as it is so atypical; floral nose, fragrant, subtle blend of small red and black fruits, rather light, slender and feminine, generous and taut texture.
It looks more like a Volnay! The exception that confirms the rule.
The wines, the style
Domaine de Montille is known for producing wines of great aromatic purity, always favouring balance and elegance rather than power or extraction. The wines are a classic expression of Burgundy, produced in the most natural way possible and with an impressive ageing capacity, as we believe that only time reveals the Great Wines. The estate's current style remains faithful to the naturalness and classicism recognised in Hubert's wines, some vintages of which required a great deal of patience, but Etienne strives to bring more openness to the bouquet in the reds, and more silkiness and smoothness to the textures without compromising the wines' ageing capacity. The estate is known with a few others in Burgundy (Arlot, DRC, Dujac, Leroy, etc...) to vinify on a regular basis, leaving a large proportion of the whole harvest which is determined each year for each vintage.
Cultivation of the vine
The Domaine has been practicing organic farming since 1995. Our wines are now Ecocert certified. Since 2005, biodynamic farming has been added to these practices, which respect the soil and living organisms.
