Pommard 2019 Les Cras - Domaine de Montille
The appellation : The Pommard "Les Cras" is our only village of the Côte de Beaune in red. The origin of the word "Cras" comes from "pierreux hillside", often used to designate a vine which is located below and whose ground is made up of stony scree and pebbles.
Very well situated, at the top of the plot, on a gentle slope facing south, in a point between two Premier Crus ("les Combes Dessus" and "le Clos Micot"), the soil of this 0.5 ha parcel is gravelly with red clay of good quality typical of Pommard. Planted at the beginning of the 1980s, it gives a generous, deep and sappy wine.
Before 2012, this parcel was exploited by the Château de Puligny but was blended with another parcel of lesser quality which has since been sold, in order to keep only this excellent locality.
The wines, the style : Domaine de Montille is known for producing wines of great aromatic purity, always favouring balance and elegance rather than power or extraction. The wines are a classic expression of Burgundy, produced in the most natural way possible and with an impressive ageing capacity, as we believe that only time reveals the Great Wines. The estate's current style remains faithful to the naturalness and classicism recognised in Hubert's wines, some vintages of which required a great deal of patience, but Etienne strives to bring more openness to the bouquet in the reds, and more silkiness and smoothness to the textures without compromising the wines' ageing capacity. The estate is known with a few others in Burgundy (Arlot, DRC, Dujac, Leroy, etc...) to vinify on a regular basis, leaving a large proportion of the whole harvest which is determined each year for each vintage.
Cultivation of the vine : The Domaine has been practicing organic farming since 1995. Our wines are now Ecocert certified. Since 2005, biodynamic farming has been added to these practices, which respect the soil and living organisms.
