Château Rayas 2002 red
Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Château Rayas red is an absolute legend of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, renowned for its unique expression of Grenache grown on an exceptional terroir of fine sand with a northerly exposure. Vinified as whole clusters and aged for an extended period in very old, large oak casks (*foudres*), it stands in stark contrast to the region’s typically powerful, dark wines, presenting a remarkably light and translucent appearance. Both on the nose and the palate, it reveals an incomparable aromatic finesse—notes of crushed strawberries, candied raspberries, kirsch, faded rose, white pepper, and a hint of forest floor—all underpinned by tannins of absolute silkiness and a captivating freshness.
The 2002 Château Rayas red is a true oenological feat, born from a disastrous vintage in the southern Rhône, which was plagued by torrential rains. While many estates failed to produce a great wine that year, Emmanuel Reynaud carried out a rigorous selection process, retaining only the very best of the surviving grapes. Now fully mature, this 2002 vintage impresses with its ethereal elegance: its very pale ruby hue, with subtle brick-toned highlights, gives way to a mesmerizing bouquet of tertiary aromas—orange peel, potpourri, garden vegetables, fine leather, and sweet spices. On the palate, the wine displays a delicacy almost reminiscent of Burgundy; it is fluid and easy-drinking, with a seamless texture extended by a beautiful, natural acidity. The result is a moving tasting experience, possessing a level of finesse rarely found in a bottle from such a challenging year.
