Château Rayas 2002 White
Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Château Rayas Blanc is one of the rarest, most atypical, and highly sought-after white wines in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Crafted by the Reynaud family from an equal blend of Grenache Blanc and Clairette, this wine flourishes on a unique terroir of very lean, sandy soil surrounded by forests—a setting that imparts a freshness and a singular style, setting it entirely apart from classic southern white wines. Patiently aged in old wooden casks (*foudres*), it is distinguished by its golden hue and a captivating nose of white flowers, candied citrus, fennel, beeswax, and sweet spices. On the palate, it is expansive and oily, yet driven by an incredible mineral tension.
2002 Vintage
The 2002 Château Rayas Blanc is something of a small miracle, given that it was a very difficult and exceptionally rainy vintage in the southern Rhône Valley. Thanks to rigorous sorting and the talent of Emmanuel Reynaud, the vineyard—situated on sandy soil—was able to drain away excess water and retain a superb level of freshness. Now fully mature, this 2002 reveals an amber hue and an extraordinarily complex nose, blending notes of *tarte tatin* (caramelized pear), dried fruits, acacia honey, orange zest, and a hint of gunflint. On the palate, despite the inherent lightness of the year, it displays remarkable balance: the richness of the Grenache Blanc is beautifully extended by a vibrant acidity and a long, saline finish—proving, once again, the estate’s unique ability to elevate vintages otherwise considered modest.
