Superb bottles of Château Sociando Mallet 2019
Haut-Médoc
95/100 James Suckling
"A superb expression of the Sociando-Mallet terroir. This wine opens with a refined bouquet combining fresh red currants, sweet blond tobacco, toasted hazelnuts, mint, and a subtle hint of damp earth. The palate is beautifully full-bodied, with a silky structure and ultra-fine, perfectly integrated tannins. The wine gains intensity on the finish, with a vibrant and racy length.
A great Haut-Médoc classic, precise, deep, and elegant. It will require another three to four years of patience to reveal its full complexity. For the most curious, it can be enjoyed from 2025, or left to rest in the cellar for those who prefer maturity."
In the heart of Haut-Médoc, Château Sociando-Mallet is a sure bet for lovers of distinguished Bordeaux wines, combining power, freshness, and finesse. Located in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, on superb gravelly soil with a clay-limestone subsoil, this independent estate embodies the elegance of the left bank.
Since the 1960s, under the leadership of Jean Gautreau, Sociando-Mallet has risen to the ranks of the greatest unclassified Bordeaux wines. The estate mainly grows Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and a hint of Cabernet Franc. The wine is aged in the traditional way, with 50% of the barrels being new, which gives it a beautiful structure and great aging potential.
This wine seduces with its depth, straightforward tannic structure, and great aromatic precision: blackcurrant, graphite, licorice, hints of violet, and a mineral finish. On tasting, we discover a firm, classic style that gains complexity with age.
At Comptoir des Millésimes, we offer several vintages of Château Sociando-Mallet, all stored in optimal conditions. A gem for lovers of old-fashioned Bordeaux, offering excellent value for money. Open after a few years of aging, or decant to enjoy its youthful exuberance.
