Bottles of Pinot Gris Roche Volcanique 2023 - Zind-Humbrecht
Wine from the Zind-Humbecht estate
95/100 James Suckling
The first impression of this excellent pinot gris is wild, flinty and smoky, but the Mirabelle plum and grilled grapefruit aromas expand quickly. Very dynamic and driving on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Super-clean finish that’s stridently minerally. From young pinot gris vines in the Grand Cru Rangen. From biodynamically grown grapes.

About the wine & terroir
The prestigious Clos Saint-Urbain spans 5.5 hectares, with nearly half dedicated to Pinot Gris. Although Léonard initially favored Riesling when acquiring this steep hillside in 1977, the spectacular results achieved on this volcanic soil quickly confirmed the immense potential of Pinot Gris. While the youngest vines are sometimes included in the Grand Cru blend, those that reach the level of excellence found in the oldest vines (planted as early as 1963) are vinified separately to create this unique cuvée. Thanks to rapid metabolic activity in this exceptional terroir, this Pinot Gris finishes fermentation with a perfectly dry profile.
Tasting notes (January 2025)
Appearance: Brilliant yellow. Nose: Deeply marked by the volcanic character of the Rangen, it releases intense notes evocative of gunflint, flint, smoke, and hot stones. Upon aeration, this mineral profile is enriched with spicy nuances and subtle roasted notes.
Palate: Both captivating and powerful, it offers remarkable persistence. The attack is alluring, with a velvety mouthfeel and a rich, sap-like texture, before extending into a saline finish driven by a vibrant, taut acidity. A wine of great distinction, built for superb aging potential.
