96/100 James Suckling
The flinty minerality of this compact and tightly wound dry riesling is absolutely extraordinary. This, the sleekness and the very racy acidity on the medium-bodied palate make it unique in Alsace. The Mirabelle plum fruit emerges very slowly. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2027

New *: The domain has chosen to change the packaging. The capsules are no longer present on the bottles. The domain wishes to be more respectful of the environment and has therefore stopped the production of metal seals. This does not change the potential of the wine and the tasting.

About the wine & terroir
Clos Windsbuhl is a prestigious historic site with origins dating back to the 14th century, when it belonged to the Austrian imperial family. The Riesling vines are rooted on the upper slopes of the vineyard, facing southeast on a steep incline where Muschelkalk limestone lies close to the surface. This high-altitude position, combined with excellent sun exposure, promotes slow grape ripening. While sugar levels remain moderate, the grapes achieve full phenolic maturity.
Although traditionally the last Riesling harvested at the estate, the Windsbuhl stands out for having one of the highest acidity levels, paired with a moderate alcohol content. Its fermentation process—among the longest at the estate—sometimes extends into the following summer, resulting in a wine with a perfectly dry balance. This unique signature imbues Windsbuhl wines—and Riesling in particular—with a distinguished texture, brimming with energy and vibrancy.
Tasting notes (January 2025)
Appearance: Pale, brilliant yellow.
Nose: Delicately expressive; upon aeration, it reveals notes of citrus, spring water, and fresh fruit, all underpinned by a superb mineral, crystalline quality.
Palate: Driven by saline acidity, the texture is simultaneously juicy and inviting, displaying great precision and profound distinction. The wine leaves an impression of absolute purity and elegance, carried by an ethereal lightness that asserts itself with remarkable persistence and energy. A long finish marks it out as a great wine with excellent aging potential.
Index: Level of sweetness on the palate. Scale from 1 to 5.
1: technically dry or tasting dry. 2: not technically dry, but the sugars are not evident on the palate. Some tasters may find a slight roundness on the finish. These wines will taste dry with some bottle ageing. 3 : medium sweetness, more important in the youth of the wine, which will gradually fade with age. 4 : Sweet wine. 5 : Sweet wine, very close to a Vendange Tardive
