98/100 James Suckling
"It's difficult to grasp the supernatural vitality and mineral freshness of this incredibly concentrated dry Gewürztraminer. The saline minerality and lemony freshness of Amalfi are exceptionally intense and vibrant. The purity of the finish is far removed from what one usually associates with this grape variety. Made from biodynamically grown grapes. Drink now or cellar."
Stuart Pigott
The Riesling Grand Cru Hengst 2023 comes from the unique limestone terroir of the Hengst in Wintzenheim, composed of iron-rich Oligocene marls. Facing east on a pronounced slope and benefiting from a warm, dry climate, this Grand Cru provides ideal conditions for Riesling to develop both power and precision. The vines, planted in 2016 at high density and selected from massal material from the Brand, are farmed biodynamically and have quickly rooted themselves in this shallow, stony soil. In 2023, the small, perfectly ripe berries produced a concentrated juice whose slow, steady fermentation resulted in a dry wine with strong structure and crystalline mineral purity. Located close to the Clos Häuserer but on much thinner soils, the Hengst parcels yield a more tightly wound Riesling, strongly marked by limestone and sandstone, offering focused energy and impressive depth.
