RATING: 97/100 Parker
Aging potential: 2019 - 2040
Tasted by Robert M. Parker Jr. on April 18, 2019: "Medium-brick in color, the nose of the 1953 Angelus dazzles with its highly evocative scent of jasmine and orange blossom (unusual for a red, but yes! ) over a core of red currant jelly, kirsch, blackberry jam and dried blueberries, with hints of melted licorice, powdered cinnamon, cloves, sandalwood and cast iron stove, as well as a hint of crushed stones. Medium-bodied, the amount of energetic fruit still coating the palate at this stage of ripeness is simply staggering. With a solid line of grainy tannins and fantastic freshness beautifully supporting all these wonderfully perfumed layers, it finishes very long and mineral. Even after an hour in the glass, the wine was still powerful, revealing even more exotic spice and incense notes, while the floral and red fruit notes held up. Simply amazing."
TERROIR
The 1953 Chateau Angelus is a blend of 20% Merlot & 7% Cabernet Franc and 73% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Less than a kilometer from the famous bell tower of Saint-Emilion, on the famous south-facing "pied de côte", Angelus is the work of a passion written for eight generations by the de Boüard de Laforest family.
