Chassagne Montrachet Red 1er cru Clos st Jean 2023 - Paul Pillot
Domaine Paul Pillot
(92–94)/100 Parker – William Kelley
The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Clos Saint-Jean Rouge is among the village's finest reds, the result of meticulous work by Thierry Pillot, who practices braiding—a method that never prunes the tops of the branches, thus promoting the vine's natural balance. The wine offers a vibrant bouquet of raspberry, orange zest, exotic spices, and flower petals. On the palate, it is fleshy, energetic, and deep, supported by a dense fruit core and fine, structured tannins. A resounding success that once again confirms Pillot's talent in this 2023 vintage.
The 2023 vintage from Domaine Paul Pillot:
This 2023 vintage marks another success for Thierry Pillot, offering whites that are both delicious and vibrant, promising a wide tasting window. As William Kelley has often pointed out, Thierry Pillot is one of the winemakers who have earned Chassagne-Montrachet its current reputation as the most dynamic village in the Côte de Beaune for fine white wines. Now in his forties, he continues to think about the next step: his viticulture, already innovative with tall and sometimes braided foliage, will soon be accompanied by a new winery located below the village, offering more space for storage and allowing for longer aging in his historic cellars in the heart of Chassagne.
- Cellaring: Drink from 2028 and will keep for 25 years (or more).
- Allergens : Contains sulfites
Presentation : The 12-hectare Domaine Paul Pillot has been directed since 2004 by the young and dynamic Thierry Pillot. The vines in the domaine's enviable palette of holdings are farmed organically, though not yet certified as such, and the wines they produce are matured for some 18 months on the lees, the final six being spent in stainless steel. Percentages of new wood are modest, with plenty of larger-format 350-liter barrels, and the lees are never stirred. Characterful, elegantly textural and mouthwateringly incisive, these are superb white Burgundies, and to my mind, Pillot is one of a handful of exciting producers who win Chassagne-Montrachet the title of Burgundy's most interesting white wine-producing village today.
