Côte-Rotie 2020 - St Cosme
Domaine de Saint Cosme direct from the property
- (94 - 96)/100 Parker
- Ageing potential: Drink from 2023 to 2035.
- Tasted by Joe Czerwinski on January 20, 2022: "Barruol's 2020 Cote Rotie blends fruit from both ends of the appellation to create an exciting mix of violets and blueberries on the nose. It is rich, concentrated and silky, with a lingering, elegant finish. A great wine. I tasted these Northern Rhône wines with Louis Barruol in his cellars in Gigondas. It is important to note that these wines are bottled under the Saint Cosme négociant label - they are not chateau bottled wines. This does not mean that they are not excellent, as Barruol has sourced some exceptional fruit from the north.
- Characteristics: 100% Serine (old syrah). Whole harvest. Schist in the Plomb, Viallière and Neve districts. Aging of twelve months: 50% in new pieces - 50% in pieces of a wine. Bottled without filtration.
- The winemaker tells you about it: "Apart from Gigondas, Côte-Rôtie is the terroir of the Rhone Valley that I prefer. Here, as in the most beautiful areas of Burgundy, the notion of terroir is exacerbated, powerful and obvious. The hillside made up of Viallière, Plomb and Neve is the one that fascinates me: it has the capacity to express finesse and complexity while showing "simplicity".
As in gastronomy and in general in any artistic activity, the most difficult thing is to make beautiful simple things. The great terroirs of the Cote Rotie illustrate this reality to perfection. Our 2014 is a true concentrate of pleasure: a real trap for hedonists who will not be able to resist its seductive power for very long. Once again, the aromatic palette is a little journey: closing one's eyes, one could well imagine strolling through a rose garden whose scents would be exhaled by a spring sun.
But one could also imagine entering at dawn in an old family house in which a fire would have been built the night before. In the mouth, it is the suavity and sapidity that dominate this year. The Cote Rotie is the only place in the northern Rhône that is capable of producing such sweetness. Here, austerity does not exist. This 2014 has fleshed out during aging, and one can only be happy when classicism connects with pleasure in this way."
