Gigondas 2019 Le Claux - Chateau de St Cosme
97-99 /100 Jeb Dunnuck
TASTING DATE :10/6/2020
"Also all Grenache from a single vineyard just down the road from the estate, the 2019 Gigondas Le Claux offers more minerality, as well as structure, and is another 2019 that will benefit from bottle age. Complex complex bouquet of red currants, clay soil and dried garrigue, camphor and licorice emerges from the glass. This beauty has well-built tannins, seamless balance and a very, very nice finish."
The winemaker tells you:
"This 1.8 hectare vineyard, mentioned on the first wine cadastre of 1902 had to be pulled up in 1914. It was certainly already quite old at that time: it was a post-phylloxera plantation probably dating from 1870-1880. But the men left to fight in August 1914 and the vineyard was not pulled up because of the lack of manpower. In 1918, after four years of war, money was lacking and my grandmother had lost two of her brothers: she therefore kept Le Claux. This vineyard is still there today and it is a great opportunity. Its soil of clay and calcareous marl from the Miocene, with small sharp gravels on the surface still produces the most "Burgundian" Gigondas, so characteristic is its finesse and its aromas of small Morello cherry."
