Châteauneuf du pape 2019 La Crau Ouest - Domaine Santa Duc
From the estate
93/100 Wine Spectator
Cellaring: Best from 2024 to 2036.
Tasted February 28, 2022 by James Molesworth: "It has a taut, racy red fruit profile, with notes of damson plum, bitter cherry and red currant, combined with burnt cedar, dried garrigue, brick dust and tobacco. The finish is marked by savory and shiso leaf. Distinctive, it relies on freshness more than power.- JM"

The estate tells you about it : Probably the proudest of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroirs, it overlooks the appellation and the Rhône.
GEOGRAPHICAL SITUATION: The plot is located exclusively in the area known as La Crau Ouest to the east of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Facing north, it creates straight, generous and complex wines.
AREA: 0.5 hectares.
GEOLOGY: Very fine sandy-clay soil from Miocene Safre allowing a particularly deep rooting.
CULTURE : Organic agriculture, certified Ecocert and Biodynamic, certified Demeter.
VARIETIES : 100% Grenache.
AGE OF THE VINES : 90 years old on average.
HARVESTING & WINE MAKING : Manual harvest in boxes with sorting on the vine, followed by a second on a sorting table. Partial destemming. The percentage of destemmed grapes is decided according to the vintage and the parcels. Vatting by gravity with total respect for the integrity of the grapes. Fermentation for 20 to 30 days in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperatures. Two long daily pump-overs. Pigeage decided at the tasting. Pressing in a pneumatic press. Malolactic fermentation in vats. Clarification of the wines in the cellar during the winter. Maturing in the spring.
AGEING : 18 months in 8 hectolitre earthenware jars. Bottling without fining or filtration.
PERSONALITY: The importance of the thermal amplitude between day and night offers tannins of great quality combining finesse and precision. This is a parcel where the biodynamic 500P preparation is sovereign. The horn dung reinforces the microbial life of the soil, the pillar of the maintenance of the organic matter in these particularly draining sandy structures. Pushed to its limits by the maturation in earthenware jars, the wine becomes tighter and more refined. With their impressive energy, the wines from La Crau Ouest have always contributed to the reputation of Rhône wines by their longevity and their unique character.
