INFORMATION ON THE VINTAGE 2018 :
Climatic trend and characteristics of the vintage: A rather mild autumn, with temperatures often above seasonal average and with sporadic rainfall, was followed by a remarkably harsh winter. From the end of February, the icy winds from Siberia (Buran) caused the mercury column to collapse well below zero. It snowed twice in the area of Bolgheri. A situation that has not occurred for many years, with temperatures that remained for several weeks between -2 and -5 °C. This contributed to prolong the vegetative stop of the plants, favouring the natural elimination of vine parasites but also feeding the water reserves of the subsoil. During the first week of March, temperatures rose slightly, accompanied by heavy rainfall. Immediately afterwards, another cold period with temperatures below the seasonal average and frequent rains delayed the budding of the vine. Spring began around mid-April with the arrival of beautiful warmer days. For about 15-20 days temperatures were above normal. Conditions returned to normal during the first ten days of May. Vegetation in the area was excellent due to favourable conditions such as a good supply of water in the soil and temperatures. During the months of May and June, the climate was characterized by sporadic rainfall alternating with beautiful sunny days. This necessitated a greater presence of labor in the vineyards, but at the same time was clearly favorable for viticulture. The plants were able to complete the flowering and fruit setting phases in the best conditions. The month of July was again very hot, with no rain and poor ventilation, resulting in above-average temperatures during the day and at night. This situation continued until the beginning of August. At that time, an Atlantic disturbance brought the situation back to normal. Sporadic rains in mid-August prevented any risk of flooding and gave new vigor to the plants. From August 20, temperatures rose again but remained well below the seasonal average. As a result, there was a marked slowdown in the phenolic ripening of the grapes causing some sporadic cases of millerandage, especially with Merlot. On the other hand, this time The condition of the grapes made it possible to suspend them longer, especially for the Merlot. Favorable weather conditions strongly characterized the vintage, which produced healthy grapes, with an excellent aromatic component but a lower sugar content than usual. Healthy, crisp and ripe grapes produced balanced, low alcohol musts with soft and velvety tannins. The good acidity, good PH and lower alcohol content conveyed freshness combined with good structure. These are the characteristics of this 2018 vintage.
