Volnay 1er Cru Santenots 2019 - Nicolas Rossignol
(92 - 94)/100 Parker
Tasted by William Kelley on January 14, 2021: "Blending plum and cassis notes with hints of wood smoke, spice, loamy soil and grilled meat, the 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots is rich and fleshy, with a layered core and a charming, seamless profile. It shows great promise."
Geographical location: These are the lower Santenots, at the same level on the hill as the Ronceret. The beginning of the plot has a slight slope and then breaks off to end up flatter.
The soil and the environment : The soil is very deep, very rich, dark red in colour with a lot of iron. There are large round rocks (Tête de mouton).
The vine: This is a blend of a young vine (30 years old) located on the Volnay side with more pebbles and an old vine (70-80 years old) located on the Meursault side with a more clayey soil.
The wine: The wine is dense and intense from the start with more animal notes than the others. Good finesse on the attack (old vine) relayed by power and length (young vine) on the finish. This wine is always more typical of the Côte de Nuits than the Côte de Beaune.
