99/100 James Suckling
“It’s hard to imagine how a dry white wine could be more concentrated than this Alsace gewurz. Mind-blowing smoke and spices, and the wine is focused in a way that is absolutely abnormal for this grape. The interplay of saltiness, delicate bitterness and restrained richness is unbelievable. Just let this incredibly deep and complex wine sink in and inspire you. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold."
Stuart Pigott
The 2023 Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain displays 14.0% acquired alcohol with only 1.1 g/L of residual sugar. Total acidity reaches 3.0 g/L H₂SO₄ (4.5 g/L tartaric), with a pH of 3.7. Yield stands at 45 hl/ha. The optimal drinking window runs from 2027 to 2048 and beyond. The vines average 44 years of age and are planted to Gewurztraminer on the Grand Cru Rangen de Thann, within the Clos Saint Urbain.
The sweetness index is 1.
1: analytically dry wine or wine that tastes dry.
The soils are composed of sedimentary volcanic rocks (tuffs and grauwacke), with a full southern exposure on a very steep slope.
Gewurztraminer is rare on the Rangen, mostly found in the lower section of the vineyard where the river’s influence and shelter from cold valley winds offer more favourable conditions. As a highly aromatic grape, it can sometimes be considered excessive, yet the sheer power and mineral depth of this volcanic terroir succeed in refining and controlling its exuberance. Formerly often harvested overripe due to the regular presence of noble rot, it is now picked healthy, enabling the production of great dry wines. This shift is driven not only by stylistic intent but also by climatic constraints, as noble rot is increasingly difficult to obtain: early botrytis development under warmer conditions tends to cause grey or acid rot. The 2023 vintage fermented quickly to full dryness and was aged on its total lees for eleven months before bottling.
New in 2023*: The domain has chosen to change the packaging. The capsules are no longer present on the bottles. The domain wishes to be more respectful of the environment and has therefore stopped the production of metal seals. This does not change the potential of the wine and the tasting.

Indice: Level of sweetness on the palate. Scale from 1 to 5.
1: analytically dry wine or wine that tastes dry. 2: not analytically dry, but the sugars are not obvious on the palate. Some tasters may find a slight roundness in the finish. These wines will taste dry with some bottle ageing. 3: medium sweetness, higher in the youth of the wine, which will gradually fade with age. 4: Sweet wine. 5: Sweet wine, very close to a Vendange Tardive.
