Château de Beaucastel Roussanne Vieilles Vignes 2009
Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc - Famille Perrin
100/100 Parker
Comment by Robert M. Parker, Jr. on October 31, 2011: "The Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc Vieilles Vignes (Roussanne) 2009 is a stunning wine of extraordinary complexity and richness. Aromas of rose petals, exotic fruits such as mango and nectarine mixed with peach, honeysuckle, and crushed pineapple marmalade emerge from this full-bodied white, along with good acidity and generous amounts of fruit and glycerin. It offers an almost body-free wine tasting experience".
The 2009 vintage : A beautiful Indian summer allowed the late grape varieties (mourvèdre, counoise) to reach perfect maturity. The selection in the vineyard was ruthless, and the production is about 50% of a "normal" harvest. The wine is quite Nordic as well, and really plays the balance and finesse card while retaining a magnificent structure. This wine will be delicious very young and has a potential that can be compared to that of the 1988 vintage.
Description : Considered as one of the greatest white wines of France, only 6000 bottles of this wine are produced.
Made from 100% very old Roussane grapes, picked when slightly over-ripe, this exceptional wine should be drunk before 2-3 years or in 10 years, with great gastronomy (chicken with truffles ...).
Location : Château de Beaucastel has a 7 hectare vineyard planted with white grape varieties.
Terroir : Miocene marine molasses covered by an alpine diluvium (rolled pebbles).
Elaboration : Manual harvesting, sorting of the harvest, picking into crates, pneumatic pressing, settling, fermentation (30% in pieces, 70% in vats).
Maturing for 8 months (30% in pieces, 70% in vats). Bottling after 8 months.
Grape varieties : Roussanne : 100%.
