Condrieu 2023 Clos Boucher - Delas Frères
95/100 James Suckling
Seamless integration of ripe stone fruit, tropical flower and coconut aromas with restrained richness and fine oak tannins. I love the textural complexity of this seductive Condrieu on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Long, creamy finish with delightful citrus freshness. From a site very close to Chateau Grillet, with more than 40-year-old vines. Matured in Burgundian oak barrels for one year, then a further six months on the lees in stainless steel. Drink or hold.
The Condrieu Clos Boucher from Delas Frères is a superb expression of northern Viognier, sourced from steep granite slopes overlooking the Rhône. This cuvée is distinguished by its balance between aromatic richness and mineral freshness, a far cry from overly exuberant Condrieu wines. The nose reveals intense aromas of apricot, white peach, white flowers, jasmine, and ripe citrus, underpinned by a very elegant stony and saline structure.
On the palate, the wine offers a full and silky texture, supported by a beautiful tension that extends the finish with remarkable precision. Aging adds depth without masking the purity of the fruit, resulting in a Condrieu that is both generous and refined, and built for excellent cellaring. It is a remarkable gastronomic white wine, perfect with fine fish, shellfish, creamy poultry dishes, or aged cheeses.
