Hermitage Les Bessards 2020 - Delas Frères
95–97/100
Reviewer: Joe Czerwinski
Tasting Period: 2025–2040
Release Date: January 20, 2022
The 2020 Hermitage Les Bessards presents itself superbly from the barrel, with a classic nose combining crushed stone, black cherry, and blackcurrant. On the palate, it is full-bodied and powerful, slightly warm, supported by silky-rich tannins. The long finish, marked by notes of licorice, confirms its great potential. A wine that should offer great drinking pleasure for nearly twenty years.
Presentation : This cuvée is a plot selection. The grapes come exclusively from the oldest parcel located on the place called "Les Bessards", in the heart of the Hermitage hillside. This wine is made only in great years. Its production is voluntarily limited to 6000 bottles (75 cl) per year. Grape variety : 100% Syrah
Vineyard: It extends over three communes of the Drôme, Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.
Soil: made up of granitic arenas covered with micaschists and gneiss, but also with beaches of round alluvial pebbles (this diversity explains the presence of localities in the appellation: Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.).
Climate: sheltered from the north wind, most of the hillsides are south-facing. Good sunshine.
Area under production: 134 ha
Annual production: 3,635 hl; maximum authorized yield: 40 hl/ha.
Grape varieties: Syrah (addition of 15% Marsanne and Roussanne authorized).
