NOTATION : 97+/100 Parker - 98/100 James Suckling
Ageing potential: 2024 - 2057
Tasted by Lisa Perrotti-Brown on March 16, 2020: "The 2017 Lafite Rothschild is a deep garnet/purple color. It opens slowly, cautiously, with restrained notes of chocolate-covered cherries, blackberries, warm cassis and wild blueberries, followed by emerging notions of smoked meats, fragrant earth, crushed rocks and lilac with hints of cast iron skillet and Marmite toast. Medium-bodied, the palate is deceptively light and quite ethereal on entry, developing on the palate to reveal elegant layers of energetic red and black fruits with tons of savory accents. Framed by exquisitely ripe and wonderfully fine tannins, it has an exhilarating freshness and a very long, hypnotically fragrant finish. Finally, the alcohol level is 12.5%, which is a miracle considering the ripeness of the Cabernet. I look forward to following the evolution of this wine!"
TERROIR
The 2017 Château Lafite Rothschild is a blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2.5% Merlot and 0.5% Petit Verdot.
After a rather mild winter, the spring was marked by the frosty nights of April 26 and 27 during which the Bordeaux vineyards were hit hard. Miraculously, Lafite emerged unscathed.
The conditions then became excellent with warm temperatures, higher than normal, and balanced and well-positioned rainfall. The flowering came early and by mid-June we were almost 15 days ahead of an average fruit set. After a good episode of rain at the end of June, temperatures remained slightly below normal for the rest of the summer. This allowed a slow and regular ripening from mid-veraison to mid-September, date of the beginning of the harvest. A last rainy episode from September 10th to 20th disrupted a serene climate without any effect on the quality of the grapes. The wines show great potential and a rather classic character.
SERVICE
Château Lafite Rothschild should be decanted for 2 hours or more. It is best served between 16 and 18°C. This will allow the wine to soften and open up its flavour. For wines that have not been aged in barrels, decanting is not necessary. Aeration in a carafe is recommended when the wine is young and has been aged in oak barrels.
FOOD AND WINE PAIRING
Château Lafite Rothschild can be served with aperitifs, starters, main courses or cheeses.
