By Robert M. Parker, Jr. in 2003: "Compared to the flamboyant aromas of the 1997, Yquem's 1996 is more subdued, though there is much to say. Light gold in color, with a tight but promising nose of roasted hazelnuts intermixed with creme brulee, vanilla beans, honey, orange marmalade, and peaches, this medium-bodied wine reveals great power in its restrained, measured personality. The acidity, weight, texture and purity of this impeccable Yquem are admirable. However, patience will be a virtue."
