Treilles 2019 - Domaine Belargus
Anjou Coteau des Treilles - Belargus
(97-99)/100 Parker
Ageing potential: 2030 - 2080
“The bronze-colored sample of the 2019 Anjou Coteau des Treilles shows some iodized sherry aromas, but is pure, refined and elegant with an intense and complex yeast-scented nose. Pure, elegant, fresh and salty, with remarkable vitality and mineral tension, this is currently a super-firm and quite tannic Treilles with a super-compact and tight, but powerful and very, very long and taut finish. The wine is not only bone-dry, it also finishes a little astringent at this stage, but its concentration of lemony fruit and structure hold out hope for another great Chenin from this 2.7-hectare monopole that Jo Pithon has brought back onto the map of the Loire's finest wines (for more details, see my note on the 2018). This 2019 is still so compact and dense that I had to taste it for a week to get close to its soul and real class, which could easily be underestimated at this early stage. I'm curious to taste this wine again when it's bottled. Tested in June 2021.”
- Style : Dry white wine
- Grape variety : Chenin
- History of the terroir : The "Coteau des Treilles", a superb monopole of the estate, came back to life at the end of the 1990s thanks to Jo Pithon, a mythical Loire winemaker. This beautiful vineyard enjoys an exceptional location. It had been abandoned in the post-war period due to its steep slopes (from 30 to 70%). After buying 70 plots from 25 different owners, Jo Pithon replanted the Chenin on these magmatic rocks of the Armorican Massif.
- Location and characteristics: This parcel is located in the heart of the Pont-Barré Nature Reserve, a protected area of biodiversity that has never known chemistry. These sunny rocky escarpments are home to an incomparably rich flora and fauna, described as early as the 18th century by the first botanists from Angers.
- Exposure: The Coteau des Treilles is a very steep, south-facing plot overlooking the Layon. It is located on a real geological chaos (composed of spilites, schists, sandstones and poudingues) which transmits its complexity and its minerality to the wine.
- Tasting: Unique wines with great ageing potential. After three years of maturing, they develop a rare aromatic intensity. Without exuberance, they express a mineral power (rather than solar power) in a model of tension, balance and energy.
- Technical information: Located in Beaulieu-sur-Layon. Cuvée Monopole. Azuré Bleu Céleste. Appellation Anjou Contrôlée. Surface area: 2.72 ha. Slope: 30-70%. Slope : South.
